How to Carve a Pumpkin!
To make a cool carved pumpkin this Halloween you will need a pumpkin (evenly shaped and medium size), a design to carve, tape, a nail, a potato peeler, a paring knife, a larger knife, newspaper, and a solid large spoon. You will also need an adult to help you with the carving.

To begin, wash your pumpkin with a little soap and water and then pat it dry. Next spread out a lot of newspapers covering your whole pumpkin carving area.

The first thing you want to do is to take the top of the pumpkin off. Take your larger knife, insert it in the top of the pumpkin with a slight angle towards the center, and cut around the stem. Cutting the top this way you will have a top piece which is wider at the top then the bottom and won't fall in. Next scrape out the insides of the pumpkin with your solid large spoon. Be sure to get all the strings and seeds out, and scrape the walls of the pumpkin so they are thinner, rather than thicker.

Now take your design and transfer it to your pumpkin. If you have the design on paper, tape it to the pumpkin. Then take a nail and poke holes through the paper into the pumpkin to create the design on the surface of the pumpkin. Once you have finished doing this, take your paring knife and connect the dots!

Now you are ready to carve your pumpkin. Be sure to have an adult do this part! and always have them carve the pumpkin with the knife cutting away from themselves! Start carving your pumpkin by carving in the middle of each feature and then pushing the carved pieces into the pumpkin and then removing them.

Once you are finished carving, you can also add some fun props to your pumpkin! Consider adding hats, scarves, painted features, etc. Have Fun! Enjoy Crafting! Happy Halloween!

Collecting Leaves

Today's Craft:
Collecting Leaves

Craft Project Directions:
Collecting is fun. One thing that is particularly fun to collect is leaves. Leaves come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. There are 1000s of different kinds of trees with leaves to collect.

You can start you collection by taking two leaves from each tree in your yard or neighborhood. If you have two leaves, you can display both the front and back side of a particular type of leaf.

When you go leaf collecting, take a book or magazine with you and insert the leaves into the pages so they don't bend and curl up.

When you get home, you will want to press your leaves. To do this you will need newspaper, paper, and heavy books. Take one leaf, place it on a piece of paper, put another piece of paper over it, put a couple piece of newspaper over them. Continue this process until you have covered all your leaves and then put your heavy books on top of it all.

Leave it alone for about a week. Then unwrap the leaves and mount them on colored paper with glue or tape and label them.

You can get a guide book to leaves and trees at your local public library to help you. You can also make all sorts of neat crafts with leaves. For ideas, Click Here.

Lovely Leaf Print Projects

Craft Project Directions:
Do you love Fall? Save a bit of season when you make some spectacular leaf creations you can use throughout the year. You can make wonderful leaf prints and decorate all sorts of things: apple picking bags, t-shirts, wrapping paper, cards, and more!
